“Okay, okay—calm down.” Katie kicked off her flip-flops and slid onto a bar stool at their kitchen counter.
“Katie, think.” Leta raised her voice, her stress so raw it caught her by surprise. “Are you sure you didn’t tell someone?”
“No, I didn’t. Absolutely did not.” Katie pulled her bare feet from the neighboring stool and spun to face her. “I can’t believe you think I’d blab something like that! You got a personal invite to the senator’s party, and you think your best friend would go around telling everyone when you asked me to keep it quiet? I mean, what’s up with that?”
Leta huffed. “Can we focus on the issue here?” She stood in the middle of the kitchen, her emotions swirling like soup about to boil over. Annoyance, confusion, regret. They all churned in her gut.
Katie held up her open palms. “Okay, first things first. You had to have shared the information with someone. And it wasn’t me. So who?” Her face went all Nancy Drew, like she was enjoying figuring out the puzzle.
“Look, I didn’t share that I’d received an invitation to that party with anyone but you. Only Mom, and she certainly—” Leta slapped her forehead. “Of course, that’s it!”
Katie leaned forward. “What?”
“I told Mom all about the party, not thinking anything about the fact that there was a cleaning lady in her room at the time. That’s the only thing it could be.” She chewed nervously on her knuckle, then suddenly dropped her hand. “I’m such an idiot!”
Katie slid from the bar stool. “Okay, this sounds like a really bad movie. You think the cleaning person had a connection to that creepy guy at your work?” She shook her head. “You know, maybe you’d better reassess this job thing. I don’t like this.”
The knot in Leta’s stomach didn’t ease. “Neither do I.”
What were the odds some random worker at Heritage House was acquainted with the Ladd Agency and Bernard Geisler? No, the story seemed far more sinister.
She didn’t have all the answers. Obviously, she’d underestimated the people she was working for—the extreme lengths they’d go to in order to find out what they needed. Even to the point of spying on her! Which meant they had somehow discovered she and Nate were friends.
Had they hired her based on that very fact? Perhaps they’d thought she had some in with Nathan, even back then, which didn’t entirely make sense. But then none of this really did.
She’d been plain stupid to ignore all the signals.
Leta had admitted to Katie that she’d had reservations about that Geisler guy all along, especially when he showed up at the Hole in the Wall. How he’d watched her with those black eyes. It’d given her the creeps then, and he gave her the creeps now.
Clearly, they’d learned she had a connection to Nate and would stop at nothing to benefit from that—certainly not dirty political tactics—even if it meant spying on her.
Jane Ladd and Bernard Geisler were bent on getting the dirt on Governor Holiday’s opponent, and they intended to use her to get it.
